Backstory¶
Phelser Cauhp wakes up on the floor of a prison cell with a terrible headache, he fears this time he may have had too much ale.
Your night at The Dancing Jester in Haran was going just as well as any other night, then a turn for the worse…a few obtuse and loud adventurers made their way into the tavern and started making a huge scene.
can’t an Elf just enjoy a mug of ale in peace?!
One thing leads to another and all mayhem breaks loose. The last thing Phelser remembers is a blow to the back of the head.
The walls of the cell are made of stone, wood, and dirt with an iron-bar door. There is no sunlight, only the flickering of fire outside your cell. It smells like dirt and standing water; you can hear a gentle drip, drip, drip. Tucked against the wall, you raise your head to look around. A puddle is in the middle of the cell with concentric circles endlessly growing and fading. You realize you aren’t alone…
Sitting against the opposite wall, and staring straight at you, is a female Dwarf.

Opening bout¶
DATE: Lion 22, 3642
You notice your cell is likely one of several in a hallway faintly lit with torches.
The dwarf is small (even for a dwarf) but exceptionally fit * suggesting a melee fighter of some sort.
She introduces herself as Dagnal Trollbleeder.
You learn this is no ordinary prison, it is the dungeons of a gladiator coliseum called The Bloody River!
Dagnal mentions a group called the Dueling Daggers and suggests they may have something to do with you ending up here.
Before you can learn more a guard appears and interrupts.
The guard introduces himself as Fredrick Brixton, Captain of the Guard at :ref:` Bloody River`.
Phelser is unceremoniously ushered into a armory and told to equip himself for a fight.
Round 1
One acolyte and three mastiff dogs await Phelser.
Javelin to a dog ONE SHOT * crowd goes wild
Surrounded by dogs, takes bonus action to disengage and run at acolyte
Stabs acolyte but he heals, then Phelser gets surrounded by dogs again but dodging bites, no damage
max damage attack of opportunity against acolyte DEAD
double crits both dogs in one turn * crowd goes bonkers
Phelser is ushered into a cleaning/resting room.
Fredrick catches Phelser praying while he rests and seems intrigued by it all.
Round 2
Two kobolds on a wooden platform, two kobolds standing guard below.
Moved back to pillar behind him but got caught by a waiting kobold
Dodge away and shot at kobold but missed, it ran away
Phelser shot at a kobold beneath the wooden platform and killed it in one shot to the chest!
A harpy flew around from a pillar and charmed Phelser, making him walk towards her
He snapped out of it just before she began attacking him
With their slings, two kobolds accidentally kill a friendly kobold engaged in a melee with Phelser and the harpy
Pheler defeats harpy after several exchanges, but very low life
Phelser misses an axe throw at a kobold on the platform and goes unconscious from a responding sling attack
Crowd chanting and cheering for Phelser to recover
He barely holds onto life
Guards break up fight, crowd happy he walks off to see another day
The guards escort Phelser to his cell after giving him a moment to wash up after the fight. This time, Phelser is alone in his cell as he awaits what The Bloody River has for him next…
Tempering of a gladiator¶
Hoppin’ Pillars!
Engage with first human on pillars, hit with shock and cause to go prone, monk attacks while laying down
Stone shot from sling whizzes by head
Dude who got knocked down stood up and returned the blow, knocking Phelser prone
Phelser pops up quickly, slaps dude off pillar unconscious, crowd goes wild
Moves closer to ring, taunts nearest combatant
He falls for it, comes over and misses at first but finally lands a blow before Phelser can
Tired of his shit, Phelser punches him in the face, and in his recoil he gives a flying knee to the jaw, the comabtant landing on his back on the ground
INSPIRATION EARNED: Phelser took advantage of a hanging combatant to CRIT step on hands and snag his sling before falling to his firey death
Slings a stone at nearby combatant and misses but immediately steps up and flurry of blows him to death off the pillar
Celebrates by pissing off a pillar in a way Engong can see the arch and distance
After a close call with the spinning log, Phelser grabs the ring and slings it to Engong in her executive loft
Spooky Scary Contracts¶
Haunted House party!
Enters house with amazing stealth
Quickly explores main floor
Immediately heads upstairs
Tries climbing a bookshelf in an office room, critically fails!
Finds contract on a desk, Phelser tries to pick it up with the end of javelin
The desk is a mimic! It bites the javelin and eats the contract
The desk opens a huge mouth and bites onto Phelser’s hand and grapples him
Phelser beats on the mimic and pushes it into the wall, wiggling free from it’s grapple
The desk turned into a chair and got its ass-plate broken in half by a Phelser kick
Phelser grabbed the contract, tripped a trap for good measure, and made a quick escape
After the fight, Phelser is visited by Fredrick who continues their little spat
Fredrick admits he convinced Engong to do one more fight with Phelser since they are making so much money
And the fight would be the biggest of them all
Fredrick gave Phelser info on 4 potential different companions, told him he can select two for the next fight
Phelser selects Tazzocks, a Dragonborn Sorcerer, and Erlan, a Wood Elf Cleric
There be dragons!¶
Tazz climbed up a 10 foot cliff to get a better view of the battlefield while Erlan and Phelser stay below
A dragon exits the mouth of a cave
Tazz misfires a Fog to front of cave on dragon instead of in the middle of the battlefield to proved Erlan/Phelser coer, and he fails to Earthbind
Dragon flies up towards Tazz on the ridge
Phelser shoots at the dragon with his longbow (misses) and then climbs up ridge
Dragon lands a bite attack and attacks with sleep breath
Tazz fires magic missle, damaging the dragon but revealing an advancing dragonborn warrior as her Fog wears off from broken concentration
Erlan engages the warrior in combat but is quickly overwhelmed by it’s fire breath and unrelenting sword attacks
Tazz blinds the dragon on the ridge, allowing Phelser to climb down the ridge to help Erlan
Phelser lands several blows and knocks the warrior prone
While doing so, another dragon appears from the cave and attacks Phelser with a bite
It also puts Erlan and the warrior to sleep with it’s breath
Tazz, who had already climbed off the ridge, ran and woke up Erlan
The blinded dragon recovered and swooped down to the single large melee
Fortunately, a swift and mighty jumping double splits-kick from Phelser was awaiting the previously-blinded-dragon, who suffered a terrible crit to the chin and died
Next, Erlan ran around the sleeping warrior and finished off the second dragon with his spear
But in doing so, woke the warrior, who backed away and attacked with a crossbow while it’s back was to the rock ridge Phelser and Tazz once were on top of
Phelser stepped up towards the warrior, Erlan heals him, Phelser lands an arrow into the warrior from his longbow, drops the bow as e ran to the warrior and landed it an incrediblly forceful kick that land in the warriors gut pressing him into the rock wall
Having defeated the two dragons and their keeper, they all took off back through the portal
Phelser was taken aside
An obsidian collar placed around his neck in an eloborate ceremony
A tattoo was put on his right arm that read, “Seven Hundred Nintey-Seventh Gladiator, Agar Duin”
Phelser is taken inside and given a chance to freshen up and given common cloths
While meditating in the wash room Jasper arrived, gave a brief introduction, told Phelser it is time to leave, and began walking away without waiting…
