Backstory¶
Initiate Paladin Herdan Berevan has been posted at Canlodge to investigate sightings of Demon Hounds. Despite the support of his local chapter and commanding officer, Nedda Underbough, he is unable to produce results. In an attempt to salvage the situation Superior Underbough sends him to Candlekeep Library as escort for a scribe from Belrdium.

Reassignment¶
DATE: Manticore 9, 3642
Herdan is patrolling around Canlodge just as any other day.
He recieves a summons to Nedda Underbough’s office
Herdan arrives to find another elf, Klaric Skwyr, in the office with Nedda.
Nedda assigns Herdan to escort Klaric to Candlekeep Library.
She hands him a letter which describes the assignment and allows him to take books from the library.
Herdan and Klaric raid the library of books (16 in total), but a guard stops them before they leave and takes half back.
They collect Klaric’s gear and map from the Tavern, acquire rations and supplies, then depart.
Walkie Talkie¶
DATE: Manticore 10, 3642
Just out of Canlodge the first day of travel goes on without a hitch. These are well patrolled roads, and neither Herdan nor Klaric look like easy prey.
Herdan presses Klaric for information about his quest.
Klaric is unpersuaded and shoulders on.
Merry Berry¶
DATE: Manticore 11, 3642
On the second day Herdan spots a thicket of Salmon Berries and they spend the rest of the day enjoying the energy the fresh fruit brings.
They walk late into the night before realizing how late it’s become, pitching a hasty camp, they sleep in their armor and don’t find much rest.
Underhung¶
DATE: Manticore 12, 3642
Third day is spent with little activity. Camp is made at dusk and no trouble befalls during the night.
Bridges and Bitches¶
DATE: Manticore 13, 3642
The forth day a strange creature is spotted flying far off.
Upon being spotted the creature changes course to approach Herdan.
Herdan and Klaric prepare for battle and take up a defensive position at a bridge.
The demon creature hovers in the air at the other end of the bridge and summons three Manes using a scroll.
As the Manes appear, the demon whips his tail throwing buring spikes into both Herdan and Klaric.
The first Mane lunges towards Klaric; slashing through his mail.
Herdan retaliates with a Critical Maul to the nearest Mane. The force of the blow explodes the demon.
A Mane lunges at Herdan but he deftly avoids the blow.
Klaric responds with a mace to the shoulder of the Mane… to little effect.
The flying demon throws more spikes, but none find their mark.
The other Mane slashes Klaric finding only his shield.
Herdan calls upon his training in Great Weapon Fighting to drive his maul home, once again, crushing the next Mane with a single blow.
Another volley from the demon pierces Herdan with its burn while the creatures files out of reach.
Herdan calls upon his Divine Smite; swinging his glowing maul through the final Manes banishing it back to the abyss.
As they prepare for the next barrage, Herdan realizes the demon has fled.
Taking a moment to collect themselves, they carry on towards Candlekeep.
Missteps¶
DATE: Manticore 14, 3642
Their destination beckoning, they push on into the evening hoping to arrive at Candlekeep before midnight.
Unfortunately, Herdan twists his ankle on a loose stone in the dark.
Hobbling they arrive exhausted in the shanty town surrounding Candlekeep much past midnight.
They enter the first open establishment in an attempt to find lodgings.
A tired and angry Tiefling sleeps behind the bar, while the floor is covered in cushions and sleeping patrons.
Some late night haggling later Herdan has a bag of hash and a place to sleep.
Sitting on the cushions, smoking hash, Herdan and Klaric drift off to sleep just as the sun begins to rise.
